You walk down real stone stairs into rooms most visitors to Tunisia never see: the House of the Hunt, the House of Amphitrite with its mosaic of the sea-nymph on a sea-monster's back, still on the floor where it was laid.

Above ground, a small theatre, the Temple of Apollo and the Memmian Baths complete a town that has none of the crowds of the country's better-known ruins — not because it has less to show, just because fewer people make the trip.
