Seeing Tunisia without renting a car

You do not need to hire a car in Tunisia, and for most visitors it is the wrong choice. Sites are far apart, signage is inconsistent outside the cities, and parking at the medinas is difficult. A private car with a driver is priced per vehicle, not per person, so for two or more people it is often close to the cost of a rental once fuel, tolls and insurance are counted — and nobody has to navigate. 1,392 fixed fares are published, and 28 tours run from €74.

Common questions

Is it safe to drive in Tunisia as a tourist?

It is legal and many people do it. The difficulty is not danger so much as navigation: junctions are poorly signed outside the main cities, and the desert roads have long stretches with no fuel.

Is a private driver expensive in Tunisia?

Less than most people expect, because the price is for the vehicle rather than per seat. A day tour starts at €74 for the whole car, so a couple pays half that each and a family of four a quarter.

Do I need to tip the driver?

It is not included and it is not expected, but it is normal to round up if the day went well. Nothing on this site is priced on the assumption of a tip.

Distances are straight-line, measured between the coordinates on our map of the sites; road distances are longer. Prices are per vehicle and come from the same database the 28 tours and 1,392 transfer fares are quoted from.
